This year, the construction industry is expecting a recovery. The increase in demand is projected to rise to 65 percent. This was the assumption of the Building and Construction Authority this January.
They are projecting between 23 to 28 billion USD new contracts this entire year. Also, the public sector is expected to have a significant contribution to it as well for a hefty sum of 15 to 18 billion USD. This will be allotted for various infrastructure projects. Please see Midwood for more details on the development.
Although with regards to the private sector there s a little bit lesser demand, it is still expected to grow by 8 to 10 billion USD this 2021. There will be a primary retrofitting of infrastructures to ensure that business in the area will be topnotch.
Since the pandemic construction projects have dropped significantly by over 6 billion dollars from 2019 to 2020. This is why we can say that it’s projected recovery rate this year will be extraordinary (if achieved).
The industry will have better management when it comes to their projects and resources once the pandemic ends.
Moreover, BCA has a projection that the industry will continue to be in a good situation over the medium term. On a side note, the public sector has always the advantage when it comes to recovery. The development is located near to nature such as Singapore Botanical Gardens and therefore have alot of nature at your doorstep.
Big infrastructure and institutional projects are the ones to support various construction projects. It includes public roads and residential developments. Please see Midwood for more details on the development.
Some of the most notable examples are the following:
• Downtown Line Extension to Sungei Kadut
• 2 Phases of Cross Island MRT Line
• Singapore Science Center relocation
• Renovation of Alexandra Hospital
• Construction of a new hospital at Bedok
• Improvement of Toa Payoh
Those projects require a significant amount of investment. This is why those projects will be successful only once there is an absence of lockdowns. It will only be possible after we nations all over the world will unite to completely end the pandemic.
The private sector’s construction demand will also increase by 3 billion USD after 3 years. This is in the case; the current pandemic will be completely solved.
Furthermore, the nominal construction results this 2021 is projected to increase between 5 to 7 billion USD. This includes new projects and at the same time backlogs from last year. Those are the projects that have been postponed due to intensive lockdowns.
This left people jobless and many construction companies closed their doors temporarily or even for good.
Conclusion
Despite the pandemic, the construction industry is gradually going back to its normal state. Many from this industry were affected and gladly there is still a chance to normalize their livelihoods.
With the efforts made by the business and government sectors, we are on this quest to make the construction industry alive again.
